Morocco is embarking on a monumental project to build the world’s largest football stadium, the **Grand Stade Hassan II**, in Casablanca.
With a seating capacity of 115,000, it will surpass North Korea’s Rungrado 1st of May Stadium, which holds 114,000 spectators.
The stadium is an important part of Morocco’s plans to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.
Construction started in October 2023 on a large 100-hectare site, located about 10 kilometers north of Casablanca. Designed by Paris-based architects Oualalou + Choi with global sports architecture firm Populous, the stadium takes inspiration from Morocco’s traditional **’Moussem’ gatherings**.
The roof, shaped like a giant tent, fits naturally into the nearby forested area.
The Grand Stade Hassan II will include two main stands, each holding 29,500 spectators, along with 12,000 additional VIP seats.
Surrounding the stadium, botanical gardens will add natural beauty to the urban environment. Tarik Oualalou, co-founder and design director of Oualalou + Choi, describes the stadium as “a welcoming space that respects nature,” showcasing Morocco’s culture and hospitality.
Expected to be finished by 2028, the stadium will be the main venue for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
With its massive size and cultural importance, the Grand Stade Hassan II is a top candidate to host the tournament’s final match.
